all the old friends
Rain, rain, rain. But at least it's a little warmer to we don't have to go so far for water.
It's really nice to go out to the barn in the morning and find all my old friends, the old timers, the ones who have been here a million times who I completely understand and who know the whole program, from the van to breakfast to taking turns going for a walk. Nice to see so many familiar faces. And it was relatively lonely around here the past few weeks (slow time for travel).
Funny how when there is more to do, I do more work but still have more incentive to do a more comprehensive job with this blog.
Not to bring up the economy on the dog blog (even on the stupid dog blog: I know, another great depression, shut up already!) but we're down a little bit from last year. I was thinking of buying an ad, either a underwriting credit on WNYC or on Google for dog boarding searches for New York City. I was also thinking of casting a wider net and advertising in Westchester or something like that, for pick up on different days and we drive more. Something like that. We're only a bit down from last year but when things really get bad I have a feeling people might not be flying off on vacation and sending their dog to camp as much as they used to... something tells me my service may be less in demand. But there are millions of dogs in the area. Enough of this topic.

And I was just thinking how I got in a nice groove with the dog camp: construction is done, Jim's been here so long that he knows all the dogs like I do (or better) and can do everything I can and more, the internet part of it is going well, the dogs seem to know what to do (mostly returnees who are at peace with the process). My mother in law watches the kid. Everything is good. Just in time for a great depression.

Now to the dogs: Little Boo is nervous. He will come to me but just seems nervous... he's with the little dogs now and I'll get him to come around.
Other new dogs seem to have settled in really well (Annie, Daisy) and all the old timers seem fine.
I have a new attendance sheet system so we can check off and make notes and get the names right.

classic glencadia video
Today's video has many of the classic glencadia elements: dogs, pumpkins, kids, buckets, horses, cats, geese. Only, some of it is in the evening and some of it is at night. You get to see the dogs going to bed there somewhere. And the video is about 11 minutes long, so stick with it.
I saw great blue heron today, a migrating bird, who stopped by our pond. I usually only see them like that: for one day. Oh, and a lot of shooting stars as I drove home last night. It was a clear, moonless night and two of the shooting stars really seemed to come right at me.
It's cold but I like it: that cold air, it really wakes you up. Going out to get more wood at night... I think the dogs like it fine to, except for Theo. Here in medium upstate New York, you're only halfway up there. You still have tons of big cities north of here: Minneapolis, Edmonton, Calgary, Montreal. There are millions and millions of fools way north of here.

blackberries (thanks for reminding me Lily), tomatoes, make Willow sit still... Mickey and some cats... Roux found the chickens
I have some still from the video for today. The stills should be pretty high res and the video less to.
These are the important points: Beegee is good now, but rather than being nervous, she is completely jealous of attention. If we pet another dog, she goes after the other dog... No harm no fowl but it means we try to keep her by herself when we're around. That's a new one (700 dogs, never saw that before).
Allie is fine.
Willow got a small cut: i don't know how. I put hydrogen peroxide on it and now she chews it. I don't have a collar to put on her head but if she keeps up I will buy one when I go to town in a minute. It's a nothing little scratch, unless she chews it open.
Duece, Maggie and Mingus go with me to vegetable inventory.
Peter seems to have hurt his leg on a walk. I mean, he pulled a muscle or something. Between his heavy breathing and his leg, he's going to have a quiet few next days. Maybe he can sit in the recovery room with Mickey.
Lily eats blackberries. She's right, they're great and I should go pick them when I'm done with this.
Charlie is quiet. I'm pretty sure he came with the other small dogs on a walk but since I can't hear him, maybe not. Anyway, he's fine.
Since Tizoc went home I haven't found the right companion for Lela.
Mickey is so friendly, he even likes cats. His testicle sack, now empty, was a little swollen. I made him sit in a small area for two days, with either Duece or Gus to keep him company, as he needs company, but I guess I should have gone for three days. So I started him on antibiotics in case he burst a blood vessle... my dog had the same after castration and healed fine, but we are monitoring. He's as sweet as can be: I can't believe he was in the shelter a week ago. He has had quite a week. I guess he figures this here is his new life. Anyway, he loves cats and can't stand to be alone, so his people should get him another dog, a cat, work from home, or take him to work.
My kids showed up at the end there very stylishly dressed. Shannon was here doing dogs in the AM but she's not in the video. Shy I guess.
Just about every dog should be in here if you stick with it.

best i can do
I could go on and on about the things I tried but failed to record with this camera, but what would the point of that be? I really liked this camera. I could buy the same again. I didn't treat it well, banging it round with the dogs, and it survived pretty well.
I ordered a new one. Should be here by Friday, which will change the amount and quality of doggy imagery on this bloggery. I aim to provide "quality doggy imagery in bloggery." I think I'll make that the title of this blog!
Lucy is much better, recovered from PTS (post-thunder syndrome). Dixie is settled in and Quinn needs some getting used to things. Jim is out there with them now. Freddie has a habit of biting you to express his affection. Princess and Cocoa are working out who is top female.
I'm waiting for my little video to upload and just chatting away. I have a couple of kids crawling on me, sitting on the proch. The weather is great, the dogs are getting along. Things are pretty good. Knock wood. Video still not uploaded? Have to try later.

bobcat in the dog yard
The Bobcat is very large and yellow with a big black mouth, big enough to scoop up 10 dogs... look in the videos and see if you can spot it.
Freya eats chicken food. Seems like Apple Ginger would love to eat a chicken.

Beany is under the weather. He has been here for months, he's old, and it's not good. Time for him to go home.
I want to make one long movie of all the dogs and I did, three times, with everything in one 4 minute video: fetch, wrestling, Frankie playing with Lucy, lovely stuff... then the camera crapped out. It was like this but longer and better:
If I want to embed the videos, it would be nice not to leave such a mess of hosts (companies where I can park them) and small little nibblets... but the camera just craps out at the worst moments. So this is short:
Ollie went to the top of the barn with a balloon and a parachute and they were going to have a race down, and as you see, it crapped out before we could see the lovely graceful drop off the light objects: and then I still had to get a ladder and climb on the roof and get the parachute back. And me made me go get the balloon out of the dogs before they popped it, as if the balloon was important.
Well, now that I got that off my chest, back to the Bobcat. We only have it for another day and there is a lot to do with it.
Oh, and one of the dog videos I accidentally selected YES about nudity and added the regular tag of DOG and got... and unseemly number of hits. Yikes. I don't suppose the people who found it were particularly amused.
Okay, I just went back out and made a video of the Bobcat in motion and the camera is definitely not working right. I need a camera to do this blog and although it is not badly broken, I think I have to buy a new one. No one really fixes stuff anymore.
Lot of bellyaching in here for such a nice day, weather's good, Jim's busy with the machine, things are looking up.

watching kids with dogs
So this embedding is still a mess because one didn't upload and now I don't know which one... and here is the story line(s):
Lula is quite clever. Not a bit dumb. She figured out how to get out, after all, and none of the others did...
I had to watch kids so I did only one or two dogs at a time.
Frankie makes friends with Ollie... Bessie is around in a lot of these.
There are dogs in all of these.

So I'm trying to embed videos. It's slower but easier to use for you and cheaper for me... We'll see. And you can compare which you like, although they seem pretty similar to me. And I thought that by spreading the accounts around, I can have more space and more links.. maybe get my blog to show up when you google "glencadia..." All my little tech experiments. Here goes..
YIKES! AND IT'S A PAIN. I'm going back to links. Funny stuff happens. And I can't just drag the whole bunch into one place. Too much clicking and setting up. I'll embed one per entry...
Veoh is no good, spend forever uploading then video disappears. Dailymotion embed html misfires. Kewego is in German and has something other than my video when I embed. I think I set up an account somewhere else too.
Youtube is more reliable. Slower, lower quality, but no nonsense. I would like to give the others a shot... and I did.

dogs again (surprise!)
Thanks for comments and emails... I just like to make sure folks really stop by.
I can't believe I have to drive to the city in a few hours... it's so nice here today. And my lawn, garden, the dog yard, the driveway, the dog closet, the horse manure all need doing. Oh well.
The story for today is that Rocky ran off. I really had no idea where he went and interviewed people on the road. While I was out driving around, my wife Aenne and the kids found him at the pond and he ran home. This is the short version of events... it all took about an hour.
Otherwise most of the dogs are in all the videos. One in the yard, the others out and about. Notice the dumb cat that isn't out of the way.
I'm trying a new place to park videos... I would prefer to embed all the videos if it doesn't take more time... so here goes nothing, with a YouTube competitor. I was thinking I could try all the video services and see which works best and just use them all, one day this one, one day the next. It does take longer (human attention-wise) than dumping them on my server and walking away.
Don't forget to do a search for Duke in the search function of the blog. He's for adoption and you should ask around. Thanks.
Last bit of news: Clarence is digging the holes.

heat wave in effect

The following needed leashes or for some reason are not in the blog: Berna... Captain...
Group one is Lucy, Lila, Moki, Cleo, Rocket, Clarence, Sophia. Here they come past the garden, my wife shouts that I have too many dogs out at once (which 7 is a lot with mine, makes 9 but I can't worry about that now!). Here the group goes through the hay field to the pond. This one is embedded above: who will swim, who wrestles for a stick. Now we are heading home. This field is not plowed so those are weeds you see there.
Lila notices the ducks across the pond in one of these and it's time to go.
Here you get a sense of how hot it is although this video is from about 7:30 am. These girls remain calm even when they see a whole pack of dogs.
Here my daughter gets in a puddle. Then we chit chat about Moki. Ollie comes by...
Here we have Macky, Shiela (who runs over to bark at horses), Sola, and Daisy. Sola hurt her foot breaking a fence this morning... she was trying to get INTO another area. Persistent. She's okay. Shiela does not like horses.
Same group as above with the whole family in on the Shiela chase. And Daisy takes an inopprotune poop and raids the food closet.

breaking news, dumb ducks, reunion of upper west side dogs, and other like stuff
While normally you mostly see dogs running around here, today we have BREAKING LEAKED video of her endorsement before anyone else... BREAKING!!! Here:
I tried to make this a breaking story on another site and I think I got some nibbles.
Okay, now some dogs, and Lotta getting all wet. And trying to copy me saying COME!
Didn't really work, watch the child and letting the dogs out.
In this video we should have Sophia, Lucy and Cleo.
On the subject of Cleo and Lucy: when Cleo came out in the morning and saw Lucy, she ran past a bunch of other dogs and began to kiss her in the corner of her mouth. And Cleo followed her around all morning, Lucy not paying much attention. They both live on the upper west side and have been here a lot, so maybe they know each other. Anyway, after much persistence Lucy finally broke down and played with Cleo and they've been inseparable since then... so that's reunion story which may or may not be evident in the videos.

Ducks are so dumb. I can't get these two to walk up the damn ramp I made them and they sit there and watch the wild birds eat their lunch day after day and would starve to death if I didn't put the food on the floor. I mean, really, how hard can it be to walk up a ramp? What did I make that house for? I'm a clutz and this took a lot of work. Can I sue them for dereliction of ducktion? Damn them for dumb duck diction? Dedicate a day to dumb duck decoding, deconstruction, and doodle directions to re-develop the dumb duck dycotomy?
Or maybe just put the food on the floor?

In this unscripted, cinema 2.0 short, filmed with non-actors, we see a small child get licked by three different dogs (Lucy, Sophia, and Cleo) and respond with ad libbed dialogue such as "Owwie" and "Yuck." Then we see a bucket with some tadpoles in it, Lucy rolls on a dead bird the cat left on the barn floor, then the three dogs take off to the field and the girl, Little Lotti Lou Lollipop, walks in a puddle, copies her father's failed attempts to control said dogs and, in the final scene, a car drives off a bridge in a firey chase scene.

Okay, now some dogs, and Lotta getting all wet. And trying to copy me saying COME!
Didn't really work, watch the child and letting the dogs out.
In this video we should have Sophia, Lucy and Cleo.
On the subject of Cleo and Lucy: when Cleo came out in the morning and saw Lucy, she ran past a bunch of other dogs and began to kiss her in the corner of her mouth. And Cleo followed her around all morning, Lucy not paying much attention. They both live on the upper west side and have been here a lot, so maybe they know each other. Anyway, after much persistence Lucy finally broke down and played with Cleo and they've been inseparable since then... so that's reunion story which may or may not be evident in the videos.

Ducks are so dumb. I can't get these two to walk up the damn ramp I made them and they sit there and watch the wild birds eat their lunch day after day and would starve to death if I didn't put the food on the floor. I mean, really, how hard can it be to walk up a ramp? What did I make that house for? I'm a clutz and this took a lot of work. Can I sue them for dereliction of ducktion? Damn them for dumb duck diction? Dedicate a day to dumb duck decoding, deconstruction, and doodle directions to re-develop the dumb duck dycotomy?
Or maybe just put the food on the floor?

all around the place
I got some comments... maybe not enough to know that everyone looks in here, but I guess you do. So I'll put up some more videos. For a lot of these guys, this is their last gallop here before we head back to the city this afternoon.

I went for a swim with Cassidy, Cozy, Gordon and Tango. Cassidy and Cozy are the sweetest pair. They sit side by side in the sun, picking each other out of the crowd for companionship. It's a very quiet, sweet relationship. And Gordon and Tango look alike, I guess both the same breed, and they act alike and play nicely. Both Cozy and Gordon are doing great. Not nervous... getting comfortable. We went for a swim and then they went tearing around the hay field but my battery died... so none of that is recorded. I will work on getting Cozy and Cassidy snuggling. Here's us at the pond.
I also wanted to get Rosie, Pipi, Gracie, and Muri in on a little dog group shot (the other little dogs need leashes). They wouldn't really cooperate and give me a nice cute picture. Here they are. And here are some more.
This one is pretty long. Cleo, Freya, WIlly, Simon and Cali go on a trip past the tomatoes, through the hay field, then Willy finds the swamp. He needs a swim. We see the tomatoes in their infant state and I begin to dream of the succulent delicious bounty of late summer, when I have bowls and bowls and buckets of these delicious (did I say that?) gorgeous tomatoes. Mike, the farmer, lets me pick all the ones with spots. That's 90%. He only harvests and markets 10% of the crop because 90% have splits in the top or spots or won't transport well because they are too ripe. I am not joking: 90% is wasted, because I can only eat and freeze about .5% of that 90%.
And 90% percent of the herbicides, pesticides and fungicides (including the ones allowed according to organic standards, like copper) are applied for aesthetics. If there were a way to get people to eat produce with spots and cracks, this world would be much cleaner, our food would taste much better and be much healthier and I wouldn't be worrying about all those chemicals next to my house... although Mike is pretty responsible even if he isn't organic. I wish he were organic though.
And I bet he wishes I wouldn't let my dogs run through his baby tomato plants. In the later summer, he would welcome my dogs to impress deer and ground hogs, but now, they can tear up a little plant.
One of the themes of today is cleanliness. You'll see some blankets hanging from the fence, for example. Cleaning the blankets is a terrible job but not so bad when it's so nice and sunny. Here is the main yard with a lot of dogs. I will let the little ones have the main yard and put the big ones inside later on. Helmut is messing with my blankets.
If you look at this video you will see most of the dogs and we will go from the dog yard, through the dog house, out down the lane toward the horse, then get diverted to the house. So the whole place in one video. Most of them are in here but Jackson and Shiela come with me.
I have tried dog beds: they don't work. I want only stuff made of biodegradable material, all cotton, all wool. Otherwise when the rip is up, and they will, sometimes within 30 minutes of unsupervised access to a new bed, I can dump it with the other matter in a big pit and let it decay. If some artificial material gets mixed into the wood shaving and other waste, then the whole thing becomes non-biodegradable and it has to go to the dump, filling up land fill instead of slowly (very slowly) turning back into dirt.
So, if you have any old blankets you want to get rid of, but not stuffed dog beds, I'll take them. And tennis balls. Otherwise, I think I have everything I need.
The other thing is the car. It can really smell. I tried to put sheets in but they get ripped up, and I seem to be doing as much cleaning as before or more, since I still have to clean the car. I figure sunshine and wind is one of the best ways to make it smell a little better so I leave the windows open in weather like this. Simon took full advantage of the open window to get himself some peace and quiet. He's asleep in the car as I write this. I just got it all clean... it used to be our family car but now I only use it for dogs. I can get quite a few in there and it gets 28 MPG, which is pretty important when you drive 600 miles a week (2 trips to the city) although the van is okay too (about 18 MPG although it should do better). Lot of money.
Well, all that is more than you need to know and I didn't catch all the dogs in the videos today... see you later.

memorial day weekend off to a nice start
We got all the dogs in here last night, everyone is good... and the weather is fine, things are looking good.

little bit basic, this entry
So today I just took some shots of the dogs hanging out in the yard. We will go out for a toot later but rain is threatening, so I have to reseed the field now, plus a whole lot of other dumb stuff...
But still, this is after breakfast and everyone is in a good mood. Grover and Hudson seem to be kindred spirits. Beany was out and about, feeling more adventurous and social. Gracie was checking to make sure everyone finished their breakfast. Rooster was with the big guys trying to get in on Grover and Hudson's game. Ayame was destroying some tennis balls. Fenway was barking at me. Betty Lou was trying to get someone to play tug of war with her and taunting Natasha.
I thought I made more than 2 videos... but the camera says I only made two.

blue bird stuck in wool, dogs swim (or don't) and Lotta taunts some cows
Non-dog video of my daughter taunting my mother's cows here. My mom is 70 and got herself cows and started a charity for AIDS orphans -- she just got back from Rwanda. Here's her site. She's raised 100s of thousands of dollars and goes to Rwanda every year. Quite something.
Moving on to swimming: here we are on our way to the pond. Mocha, Hudson, Sam, Gracie and Oscar are on this trip and should be all of these videos. Look at all the links in this paragraph. Hudson took a swim (which we weren't sure he would and he needed some time). Oscar inspired him. My dog (the black one, Gustov) discovered he could swim when I took the canoe out without him. Anyway, Hudson then ran away from the pond and did loops around the field... trying to figure out if he likes it. Then Mocha was inspired. He was out of his mind afterward too and he and Gustov started growling at each other, which they never did before.
That's all for today. On the way to the school but Ollie and I saw a blue bird stuck in some wool, hanging from the bird house along the driveway. She was dangling out the door upside down. It was Ollie's idea to stock the house with wool for their nest and I was hoping for blue birds so we put the house out early in the spring... but the wool was clearly a mistake, as she was stuck.
I climbed up on the fence and tried to free her while her husband flew around my head, extremely upset. In the end I had to let her go with some wool still stuck on her leg, figuring she could pick it off at her leisure... and she flew away.
That was the adventure this morning... and we have a lot just walking up and down the driveway.
