Most of the boarding in the city consists of kennels/with dogs taken out for walks. Glencadia offers such a nice alternative. We sent our 3 dogs there. Love the pickup and drop off service! The dogs came back happy and tired. I have recommended this place to many of our dog-owning friends.

glencadia is really the only place id send my pooch. a friend referred me to will at glencadia and i havent looked back. shibby just returned from her fourth (fifth?) 'vacation' and she is enviably relaxed.

I love Glencadia! I was referred to Will by a good friend who used to send her dog - and now my dog Saki has been there 3 times already, for stays as long as 14 days+.

Reading the negative reviews on this site, I understand the confusion in communication at times, but I do not doubt Will's integrity and passion. A lot of effort goes into running such a business and I appreciate so much the free drop off and pick ups.

I have a female Chow Chow of 14 years. As many know the breed is temperamental. Saki is a bit skiddish, non-affectionate with strangers, and rather do her own thing than play with other dogs. But she loves new surroundings and being outside as much as possible. She can even be a bit aggressive towards other dogs (only by growling - never biting) and this usually gets her in trouble bc dogs attack her - but that NEVER happened while she was at Glencadia.

I wrote to Will about my concerns for Saki, when I first sent her to Glencadia. He was super polite and responsive. I could see in the videos she would just stand and stare around blankly - looking a little bewildered and a little lost and Will was very nice to tell me about her and how she was doing. Mentioning that she was totally unresponsive to him and was scared of the camera but seemed fine when you left her alone.

Also from the videos I could see she was as relaxed as could be expected in a foreign setting while at Glencadia. I actually feel its a bit like boarding school for her - teaching her how to socialize and belong to a pack whether she likes it or not and adapt to new situations. She has never returned traumatized like some of these other reviews claim of their pets. Either way she is happy to ride in a car and to stand out near the barn for hours on end - even when all the other dogs are asleep.

PS - The only thing that is tricky is making sure your addresses are all correct on the reservation and on the site. I believe its easy to mark things incorrectly if you have more than one address saved to your profile. When editting anything in your reservation the site restores your pick up and drop off to default/billing settings - and that can be a huge mistake as I have experienced - but even then Will was patient and handled the whole situation wonderfully.

My scottie, Ringo Star has been to the dog camp twice. The first time for 5 weeks, the second time for 4 weeks. He had a blast both times. He came back a little messy , but that's because he was in the water, and chasing the geese! I did't realize how bossy he was till I saw him on the videos:))) Weve had a graet experience, and plan to board him again this summer. It's a big plus that Will's kids and cousins help out with the dogs. Ringo loves the attention!

Our 3-legged dog Maggie has been going to Glencadia for YEARS now. Will has been super flexible about letting us drop her off and pick her up when we're upstate. Maggie has a great time - she comes back smelly and exhausted - just as I'd expect she would from a week playing outside.

I live near the dog camp and have seen the full setup. I think the dogs have a good time and get a lot of exercise. The camp has several full time workers who love the dogs. I can see how some dogs have an issue with being away from their owners and the change in enviroment. That would be true almost everywhere you send your dog. From what I have seen this is by far the minority of dogs. I personaly have no issue leaving my dog at the camp. It is much better then leaving them in a cage in the city.

I kind of wonder if the few negative reviews are more a factor of the owners then the dogs.

We have been sending our dog Mickey to Glencadia for over two years, in all we've sent him 8 times. The first time we sent him he had just had surgery, and Will let him stay in the house!! He always recognizes Will when he comes to pick him up, and is happy to go with him-- which for me says he enjoys being at Glencadia. He's also wagging his tail whenever I see him in the videos. I like that he gets to spend time outdoors and with other dogs. Will's kids also play with him a lot, which he loves. He's much more of a people-dog than a dog-dog.

I couldn't imagine why anyone would give Glencadia bad reviews. Looking at the few negative reviews, I can see how some of the confusions could happen. In my conversations with Will (and on the website), he's made it clear that there are certain hours that we could go to Glencadia to visit/pick up/drop off. I can see why, because I'm sure they don't want their evenings and weekends interrupted by having to entertain people all the time.

In terms of the stinkiness, it is true that dogs don't usually come back from Glencadia smelling too fresh. I thought about paying to have ours groomed but then I thought he might smell anyway from the van. But it's just something we've accepted because there are so many good things about Glencadia.

As for the dog sleeping all the time, that happens with our dog too when he gets home, I think because of all the excitement of being away! He comes home happy but tired out, we give him a bath, and then he sleeps for two or three days, and then he's back to his normal wacky self.
We're considering moving to another state, and one of my few hesitations is that we probably won't be able to afford anything as nice as Glencadia in Texas!

My 2 dogs have been going to Glencadia for over 4 years and they love it. They are outside almost all day, no crates or kennels and they get lot s of attention. Will could not be a nicer guy and everyone who works with him is terrific. One of my dogs gets 2 pills a day and I've never had any issues with his meds. They come home exhausted and sleep for 2 days. I have driven to Glencadia and seen the facilities and it is perfect for dogs and for owners who do not want their dogs in crates or cages. I have moved several times and Will has been great about arranging pick up and drop off around my geographic location.

As intended, I got up at 5 and did water, cleaning and food before the winds picked up. In fact, there was no wind. Rain isn't really a problem: nothing here to flood except my basement and that has never happened in 7 years here. So all the dogs are fine, got to go out (covered area outside if they don't like to get wet and some DO like to get wet)... they had breakfast and everything is clean. They can still go out if they want -- I'll close the yard if the wind picks up. Right now, this is just a lot of rain. No leaks. No problems. No fences blowing over.

I know we will be making a lot of changes in terms of drop off and pick up due to cancelled flights and wet road and stuff. We'll be in touch and see how things look here after the peak and after I get in all the emails about people not being home, etc...

All the dogs are fine. We are fine. Dogs that can't go home due to flight delays can stay here as long as needed.

This big hound mix is a lovely dog -- but huge, probably 110 pounds. She was from Tennessee and my wife Aenne saw a post asking someone to house her while the rescue group finds a home.

1. You have to let go of the handles even if you think the water might be cold.
2. We have tiny frogs all of a sudden.
3. Hear any loud persistent barking? Try another day randomly. All of these videos are made on my property.
4. Pepper did chase the sheep but nothing much happened.
5. Maggie did not get a chicken.
6. Some of these videos are from yesterday afternoon, so really one afternoon and one morning.
7. Its a waterproof camera and I thought about taking videos of dogs swimming but with me in the water... but it is cold in the morning. I'll try that this afternoon if it gets hot like yesterday.
8. If you live in the city you can get someone to do your laundry and fix stuff when it breaks and can order food delivered and don't have to mow and weed and feed: in short, living in the city is much more efficient in use of time and better for the environment. Also, property taxes here are high, you have to pay a lot in gas and automobile maintenance, schools are entirely, unremittingly and absolutely average, little league is a bit too serious and academics, school is a bit too lackadaisical, government is corrupt and worse than useless, the weather is bad, voodoo is law, development is poorly planned... and I would continue to tell you all the things wrong with living in Columbia County but my goat got out again and I have to go tie her up since she won't stay in the fence, that and 23 other things.

Glencadia is making a few policy and website modifications to 1) comply with some changes in dog laws; 2) to fix recurring problems for our customers; 3) upgrade and enhance the utility of the website; 4) streamline and clarify billing and charges. Other changes too at the end of the message.

NEW DOG COLLAR POLICY

Starting in 2011, all dogs coming to camp have to wear a new special custom Glencadia collar that will have an individual tag with your dog's name, license and rabies info. You will keep your regular collar at home and put your Glencadia collar on before we pick up your dog. When you get home, you take the Glencadia collar off and save it for next time.

We will comply with all regulations and you will not lose your collar or tags again. You will have a back up collar with all your legal information in case your dog loses his or her collar or tag.

NEW WEBSITE

In addition to process dog license and vaccine info in a different way to comply with rules and regulations more efficiently, the website includes many changes and improvements. Most of these will either be obvious when you go to the site and make a reservation.

Clarity in billing: No more confusion about the price. What you see is what you get. Payment info should be correct and change as you modify your reservation. You will clearly see what you have to pay before you book. Bugs taken out!

Vaccine info stored and automatically monitored for expiration date. You only have to enter vaccine info one time. If something is out of date, the system will know when you make a reservation. Otherwise, you can click and reserve. Your vaccine and license information will be saved in your account if you ever need it for any other purpose.

Discounts for frequent boarders. After you send your dog to Glencadia 10 times, you qualify for a Silver membership: 5% off on all future dog boarding. After 20 trips to camp, you and your dog qualify for 10% off from then on. Reservations from the past apply to discounts, so log in and make sure it's all right. System will automatically credit your reservation after you qualify. Credit will apply soon after your dog's departure. Cancelled, no show reservations do not count.

Click and pay. No more need for email invoices. Credit card through Paypal. No Paypal account necessary. You can also buy your collar and whatever else we get in the store online by credit card.

Pond dredged. We used to have a muddy shallow pond for dogs to swim in. Now we have a deep, open beautiful pond to swim in.

New Employee:

Naomi joins the team here and I (Will) couldn't be happier. Some of you have met Naomi and her daughter Brooklyn dropping off and picking up dogs in the city. Brooklyn is also a great addition around here, as she loves dogs more than my son ever will I think. Naomi is also the groomer and vet assistant around here, looking up medicines provided by customers online and making sure all dogs get their dosages on time. She is great with dogs and already knows them all. It's really a great thing she's here.

Problems with the Town:

Some rumors are going around so I might as well talk story, as they say in Hawaii. To make a very long story very short, the town of Stuyvesant, where I live up here in Columbia County, kind of ganged up on me and tried to close the dog camp down. They still would love to get me, but it's not going to happen. I think my position is pretty good now. I might have a zoning appeals hearing one day, though, and at that point I would actually appreciate some letters of support from customers.

Actually, when I finally get a hearing, I would like people to come and speak, if you would, or at least write something up about the camp for the board.

Some people assume that since I have a lot of dogs, there must be a lot of barking. But I am 15 to 20 times further away from my nearest neighbor than the average house is to the next one in the little hamlet here. Since sound decays at the inverse square of distance and there is an average of more than one dog per house in the hamlet, I would need 1,500 dogs to achieve the same level of sound produced by the average residence.

Also, I have letters of support from every single neighbor in the area, that is 100% of the people who live near me. I have operating in this town since 2005 and was approved to operate by the planning board unanimously in 2009 without condition.

If the charge of dog barking is impossible and all the neighbors don't mind my business, how could I have a problem with the town government? How? Because government actions in this town generally serve no public interest.

Not only did the town challenge the laws of physics, my constitutional rights were violated. I suspect the whole campaign is politically motivated.

Here is my political blog. You can see why these guys might not like me.

It's been a year of trouble that cost me 20,000 dollars and involved some harassment and guys scoping out my house all the time. Still, I like my constitutional rights and don't appreciate anyone trying to restrict those.

They don't see it like that.

And I could go on for a year with all the ups and downs and details... and I might on the political blog one day, maybe when I finally have an appeal hearing.

The videos include footage taken before, during and after the storm. It'll be pretty obvious which is which from the amount of snow on the ground and amount of water on the lens.

When KZ knocked my camera down, the crash dislodged the stick I use to prop up the lens cover which has been broken since another dog knocked the camera out of my hand long ago. This explains the black line at the bottom of some of the shots.

Amy took dogs out and I passed the camera off to her.

I tried to shoot in the morning today but as you can see, the storm was not over. Then the camera got wet. I switched to another camera that's waterproof but not as high res, thus the second video.

We tried to dog sled again but we haven't quite figured it out yet. Tomorrow should be nice weather and we might give it another try.

So we did our best.

Other news:

Mush killed a chicken. Mush is pretty slow but there was a traffic jam as the chickens tried to get home. Oh well.

I got an ipad for Christmas.

One thing I can do is live update my position while I'm driving so when I'm one my way to your house you can check TWITTER to see where the ipad is (and hopefully me too). I don't know if that feature will be live on Monday, but it might be. Certainly by Tuesday I will have that working.

I actually can set it to upload every 15 minutes or whatever, or I have to press the the SHARE button.

After KZ crashed into the camera, mistaking the video camera for a stick, I did the Christmas Eve fetch competition and Manhattan won 4 to 1 -- but the video isn't in the camera. I think the door to the flash disc came open when the camera went flying from my hand -- it still works.

I know I missed some dogs. I thought I shot a lot of video but it didn't pan out. Send me a comment and complain. I will get all of them tomorrow. I was thinking of adding a sled dog competition to the fetch contest.

The official fetch contest is tomorrow. The smart money is on Manhattan.
